WEDNESDAY 7TH JULY
HIGH FREQUENCY BANDWIDTH
High Frequency Bandwidth is the new "electrocosmic hip hop" project from The Orb's Alex Paterson and acclaimed producer/remixer/engineer Dom Beken, who previously collaborated as 50% of the Transit Kings (along with Guy Pratt and Jimmy Cauty). Starting out as a drummer in Liverpool, Dom runs a music production company as well as performing in his band Belka & Stelka, and has worked with the likes of David Bowie, Echo And The Bunnymen and Manson, whilst Alex is seen as an electronic pioneer and acid house veteran after his work as The Orb. HFB have just released their debut album 'Hell, Fire And Brimstone' via Malicious Damage and are all set to play The Good Ship in London on 8 Jul. Ahead of their gig we spoke to Dom to find out more.

Q1 How did you start out making music?
I really struggled reading sheet music in my piano lessons as a child. I'd read the first few bars then make it up! Later at school I got hold of the music department's Casio CZ5000, which had an eight-track sequencer, plus a guitar and a four-track cassette machine. From then on figuring out how to write and record music became a bit of an obsession.

Q2 What inspired your latest album?
The beats behind this record have been a bit of an obsession for both of us since day one, and when we worked together on the Transit Kings album things started drifting this way. After that, it was a simple question of looking for a sound that encompassed what we both love the most and makes the most sense of our line-up: a DJ/producer and a musician. Inspiration comes from just waking up every day and looking around yourself. There never seems to be a shortage of questions and possible answers to write about!

Q3 What process do you go through in creating a track?
We don't have a formula, I think we just start by asking 'what are you thinking about or feeling today?' One of us usually already has a sound in our heads, and we'll begin by having as many ways as possible available in the studio for that to come out and go down, so we can bounce things between us. At some point the clouds part and the shape of things becomes obvious. Then the usual nuts and bolts bit of studio production begins, with the caveat that there's always scope for a radical or surreal change in direction at any point!

Q4 Which artists influence your work?
I think any artist being honest would have to admit that everything they ever heard is an influence, whether you love it and borrow it, hate it and avoid it, or just can't help the fact that it has an effect on you, be it music or just sounds you hear around you. However, if you listen to the album, certain specific things float around in there, like the experimental approach of Stones Throw artists such as Oh No and Madlib, film composers like Sergio Leone, other hip hop artists like Prefuse 73 and DJ Shadow, jazz artists like Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk and classical composers Igor Stravinsky, Claude Debussy, Aaron Copeland and Samuel Barber.

Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?
"Do you like it?"

Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest album, and for the future?
Obviously we'd like a lot of people to hear it, and hopefully buy it! The chance to play it out live to more audiences would be great. But beyond that we are also enjoying the avenues of working with other media such as visual artists, film and video games. We had a great experience with adapting tracks from the album for the PS2 game 'Shooter' and are always looking for collaborations with other artists.

Produced by Bloodshy & Avant (who co-wrote and produced Britney Spears' 'Toxic' and make up two thirds of Miike Snow), Ferreira's UK debut single, 'One', places rolling synths and skittering drums beneath her vocals, all of which will drill themselves into your skull as the summer progresses. The single hits the shops on 23 Aug, with the album due to follow later this year.

ONE IN TWELVE FESTIVAL TICKETS A FAKE
One in twelve festival tickets sold in the UK last year were fake, according to an unpublished research report from the Office Of Fair Trading, revealed by The Guardian this week.

The number of fake music festival tickets on the market seems to have risen dramatically in recent years, partly because of the boom in consumer interest for festival tickets in general, and partly because of the world wide web, which allows fraudsters to reach bigger audiences, and to masquerade behind legitimate looking websites, often using official sounding web addresses. At the same time, festival promoters have become better at spotting fake tickets, which means an increasing number of festival-goers who buy tickets from dodgy providers will be turned away at the gate. Some promoters have also become more proactive in warning consumers about fake ticket sellers, and in pointing fans towards legitimate agencies.

The Guardian quote a rep from the OFT's consumer helpline Consumer Direct, who confirms: "We estimate that one in twelve of the fans are caught out by fake [ticket] websites. And we now know that the average loss to each fan is £80".

As previously reported, the OFT and the live music industry have collaborated on the Just Tick It campaign, which aims to help festival fans identify the legitimate sellers from the fake.

Relaunching that for the 2010 festival season, Live Nation's COO of UK Music, John Probyn, recently told reporters: "[The sale of fake tickets] is known to be linked to organised crime. We have known about fake-ticketing websites for some time but in the past three years [fake ticket selling] has developed into a big business. Every time we have tickets go on sale for a festival or a big show, you only have to do a quick search of the internet and can bet that half the sites that look official are, in fact, fakes".

Meanwhile the OFT's Michele Shambrook added: "We really hope that the Just Tick It campaign can make a big difference to the number of people being scammed when trying to buy tickets this summer. We urge everyone to double check that a website is legitimate before parting with any money online".

The OFT has published some specific information for people worried about potential ticket fraudsters, which can be read at www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/ticketscams.

CROSBY ESTATE WIN ROYALTIES DISPUTE
A ten year long legal dispute between Universal Music and the estate of Bing Crosby came to an end yesterday - unless the former appeal - when a jury in California ordered the major to pay the company that administers the late crooner's estate $2 million.

HLC Inc first sued Universal over Crosby's royalties in 2000. Two other legal complaints followed, though all three were then combined into one court hearing. The two million relates to revenues generated by various posthumous Crosby releases undertaken by Universal and its subsidiaries.

According to Variety, HLC had asked the court to terminate Crosby's original contract with Universal and to force the major to hand over all his master recordings to the estate, but the jury didn't accept that was an appropriate course of action, despite Universal's failure to pay the Crosby estate all the royalties it was due.

A separate legal dispute relating to the digital sales of the Crosby catalogue is still to go to court. It is expected to be heard in the LA courts in December.

GEORGE MICHAEL ARRESTED FOR BEING UNFIT TO DRIVE
So, as you almost certainly already know, it seems that the frequently troublesome George Michael was in trouble with the police again last weekend, again for reckless driving.

Michael's latest car-based problems were splashed across yesterday's Daily Mirror. It seems Michael accidentally drove his Range Rover into a Snappy Snaps store in Hampstead in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It's known Michael was arrested and underwent drink and drug tests after the accident, though it's not clear what the results of those tests were. The singer was bailed pending further investigations.

Michael, of course, has had a number of previous runs in with the London police regards both his dodgy driving and drug taking. So much so, a lot of media yesterday recycled an apology he issued two years ago after a previous arrest in which he promised his fans that he'd "sort himself out" and apologised to the wider public for "boring" them with his frequent but slightly tedious arrests.

POLARIS SHORT LIST ANNOUNCED
Organisers of the Polaris Music Prize, the annual music award destined to always be described as "sort of the Canadian version of the Mercury Music Prize", have announced their short list for 2010. The ten albums of the year are as follows:

The Besnard Lakes - The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night
Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record
Caribou - Swim
Karkwa - Les Chemins De Verre
Dan Mangan - Nice, Nice, Very Nice
Owen Pallett - Heartland
Radio Radio - Belmundo Regal
The Sadies - Darker Circles
Shad - TSOL
Tegan And Sara - Sainthood

One of these ten will win the overall prize on 20 Sep and get a twenty grand cheque courtesy of Sirius Satellite Radio.

Commenting on the final list of ten, the award's founder, Steve Jordan, told CMU: "Once again our jury has selected a magnificently and satisfyingly diverse short list. They've managed to reward continued artistic achievement from previous winners and nominees while making room for both newcomers like Radio Radio, Karkwa, and Dan Mangan and veterans like Tegan And Sara and The Sadies. Our Grand Jury will have their work cut out for them selecting a winner".

GAGA FIRST STAR TO PASS TEN MILLION FACEBOOK FANS
Here's a bit of useless digital trivia for you. Lady Gaga has become the first person in the world to have more than ten million Facebook fans, according to Famecount.com, who seemingly follow these things. Who'd have thought the Gaga would out fan Jedward?

Actually, although this Facebook feat is being widely reported today, Gaga currently has 11,109,469 fans on the social network, which suggests she passed the ten million benchmark a while ago. Close rival, in all sorts of ways, especially the crazy costumes, Barack Obama also now has 10,018,956 fans, so has now passed the ten million point too.

Interestingly, while Gaga is the biggest Facebook star, she doesn't have the most fans overall. A gambling website called Texas Hold'em Poker has over 20 million fans, proving once again we should all get out of this pop nonsense and set up companies that just screw cash out of idiots with serious gambling addictions.

BLUE "BACK VERY SOON"
Lee Ryan hasn't even released his new solo album yet and already he's talking about getting his old band back together. Or are they together already? To be honest, I've sort of lost track of the Blue reunion. Will you forgive me?

Well anyway, Ryan told MTV: "We are coming back, we're going to do another album. I can't wait! We've already got some material in the bag, which we have been working on with Ne-Yo. I've worked with Ne-Yo for about five years and we've got some really good tracks. We will be recording more this year. I don't know when we're going to be releasing right now but we're gonna be coming back, there's going to be a tour. You're gonna be seeing Blue back very soon".

Ryan's new double A-side single, 'I Am Who I Am/Secret Love' is out this week. His second solo album, 'Confessions', is due for release via Polydor on 11 Oct.

LIL KIM MAY OR MAY NOT BE WORKING WITH RIHANNA
Lil Kim is "90% sure" that she's going to record a track with Rihanna, but she wants it to be a surprise if and when it comes out, so she's not going to say for sure.

When asked if a collaboration was in the offing, Lil Kim told Lifelounge: "Well, I'm a huge Rihanna fan, and she's a friend of mine, so I'm almost guessing, if I had to guess, I'm 90% sure that a song is probably in the works".

But then she added: "I look at it this way, if it happens, it happens. And it should be a surprise. It shouldn't be something that people are anticipating, or have their own personal opinions on it before it even comes out. So I probably won't ever mention that again".

Let's just forget I said anything, I'm probably ruining everything.

UNKLE WORKING WITH NICK CAVE
UNKLE have confirmed that they are working with Nick Cave on a track for their next album, 'Day Fall'. The follow-up (and apparently a companion to) the recently released, 'Where Did The Night Fall', is currently pencilled in for release in February.

Speaking to 6music, UNKLE main man James Lavelle said of collaborating with Cave: "We've been working with him on creating a little thing for the next album. It's fitting in very good".

EMI TO RE-RELEASE APPLE ALBUMS
EMI has teamed up with The Beatles company Apple Corp to launch remastered versions of fifteen albums originally released by the Apple record label between 1968 and 1973. The fifteen albums will get both physical and digital releases.

But before you get excited, that doesn't mean the Fab Four are finally coming to iTunes. The albums getting a re-release are not Beatles albums - they were, of course, all remastered and re-released last year - but are from the other artists signed to the label, ie James Taylor, Badfinger, Billy Preston, Mary Hopkin, Doris Troy and Jackie Lomax.

The remastered albums, many of which will include bonus tracks, will be released on 25 Oct. The fifteen albums getting a re-release are as follows:

James Taylor - James Taylor (1968)
Badfinger - Magic Christian Music (1970)
Badfinger - No Dice (1970)
Badfinger - Straight Up (1972)
Badfinger - Ass (1974)
Mary Hopkin - Post Card (1969)
Mary Hopkin - Earth Song, Ocean Song (1971)
Billy Preston - That's The Way God Planned It (1969)
Billy Preston - Encouraging Words (1970)
Doris Troy - Doris Troy (1970)
Jackie Lomax - Is This What You Want? (1968)
The Modern Jazz Quartet - Under The Jasmin Tree (1968)
The Modern Jazz Quartet - Space (1969)
John Tavener - The Whale (1970)
John Tavener - Celtic Requiem (1971)

RUSKO LAUNCHES NEW SINGLE WITH BANNED VIDEO
Energetic dubstep type Rusko will release 'Hold On', the second single from his 'OMG!' album, on 12 Jul via Mad Decent. Featuring vocals from Dirty Projectors' Amber Coffman, the single comes backed with remixes from Sub Focus, Twelfth Planet and Tom Stephan.

The track also has the added bonus of having had its video banned by MTV and YouTube. Why it's been banned I'm not sure, there doesn't seem to be anything in it that couldn't be blurred out. Maybe I missed something. Have a look for yourself here: vimeo.com/12653146

EP REVIEW: Charlotte Gainsbourg - Live At Sunset Sound (Because Music)
Charlotte Gainsbourg always seems to do ten times better with Beck by her side, who is, debatably, one of the greatest musicians and producers of our time. 'Live At Sunset Sound', which has been produced by the man himself, is a collection of five live recordings from her most recent (and Beck produced) album 'IRM': 'Time Of Assassins', 'Heaven Can Wait', 'Greenwich Mean Time', the delectable 'Voyage' and 'In The End'.

So perfect is it, you would almost never be able to tell that 'Live At Sunset Sound' is a session recording. Lush with rich instrumentals, backing vocals from Beck, and, of course, overlayed with Gainsbourg's uniquely beautiful voice, it is a sharp, gorgeous record that showcases the best of the best from two extremely talented artists. CTS EVENTIM BUY GERMAN BIT OF SEE TICKETS
German ticketing giant CTS Eventim - the company who most vocally opposed the merger of Live Nation and Ticketmaster during the UK Competition Commission's investigation of that deal - has acquired the German division of See Tickets, which owns various businesses operating under the Ticket Online brand.

See Tickets Germany was owned by the See Tickets International company, which is in turn owned by private equity types Parcom and Dutch live entertainment group Stage Entertainment. The same deal also includes a twelve year exclusive ticketing relationship in Germany between CTS Eventim and Stage Entertainment, who produce mainly musical shows and theatrical extravaganzas.

Confirming the deal, CTS Eventim's CFO, Volker Bischoff, told Billboard: "In addition to further enhancing our market leader position and securing an attractive programme of events, this acquisition provides us with substantial synergies [and savings], currently estimated at more than 15 million euros per annum, primarily as a result of scale effects in ticketing operations. By making this acquisition, we have also secured exclusive ticketing access to the musical productions of Stage Entertainment, which has produced worldwide successes such as 'The Lion King,' 'Mamma Mia,' 'Tarzan' and 'Holiday On Ice'".

EUROPEAN DIGITAL DISTRIBUTOR HIRES US REP
Hamburg-based digital music distribution and marketing company finetunes has appointed a new New York-based US representative to handle and develop customer relations in North America. The new US rep is Ray Farrell, who was recently a Senior VP for digital royalty specialists Royalty Share Inc, and prior to that a VP at eMusic.

Confirming the new appointment, finetunes MD Oke Goettlick told CMU: "For the ever-changing and competitive US market it was clear that we wanted an up to date expert on today's label scenery. Ray has a strong track record in the digital sector and brings in a great network of business and artist contacts".

Farrell himself added: "I have worked with finetunes extensively in the past and I am thrilled to be joining the team. The finetunes distribution and promotion platform is among the most innovative and easy to use. I look forward to expanding the company's network of digital partnerships worldwide".

MIGHT EU'S NEW DIGITAL AGENDA FORCE IPHONE OPEN?
Some tech experts reckon a new Digital Agenda proposal document published by the European Commission in May could result in rules that force companies like Apple to open up their technologies to rivals, so that tech firms could develop software that would work with the iPhone operating system without having to have Apple's approval, and so that rival smart phones and MP3 players could sync with iTunes.

Any new rules might also force Apple to enable Flash to work on the iPhone. The tech giant's decision to shun Flash on their mobile device has been controversial, and further strained relationships between Apple and Flash makers Adobe, though many accept Apple chose not to support Flash on the iPhone for sound technical reasons.

Interest in the potential implications of the Digital Agenda document for Apple has risen this week because of an article in Tech Daily, whose reporter Jason Mick says: "Under the new measures the EU may gain the power to force Apple to allow Flash onboard. It may also be able to finally force Apple to allow third-party devices - like Android smartphones, the Palm Pre, or rival MP3 players - to sync with iTunes".

Although the Agenda document is not deliberately written to target Apple specifically, the iPod maker has long had its critics in the European Union because of some of its closed shop practices.

Back in the days when digital rights management was applied to all legitimate major label downloads, meaning only iTunes could sell iPod-compliant major label music (the iPod only playing non-protected MP3s or Apple's proprietary AAC format), there was talk of forcing Apple to open up its digital music technology so others could sell DRMed iPod-compliant music. But the majors finally dropping DRM from its downloads ended the need for any such legislative measures, because iTunes competitors could start selling MP3s.

EDWARD JEDWARD BRANDS BONO "UNPROFESSIONAL"
Edward Grimes, the Edward half of Jedward, has called Bono "unprofessional" for forcing U2 to cancel tour dates in order for him to complete a programme of rehabilitation after undergoing emergency back surgery in May. Well, kind of. Grimes was speaking to The Sun about his previously reported on-stage accident at Sunday's T4 On The Beach, which left him with torn knee ligaments.

He told the tabloid: "I was crying like a baby in the ambulance, thinking I've got to do a tour in Ireland and promote the album. Jedward is a professional band. We have to go on for our fans. We don't want to be like U2 - we'll carry on even if I have to go on stage on crutches. We should do a hospital scene as part of the tour. That might work".

He added that he refused pain relief at the hospital for fear of becoming a junkie: "The doctor wanted to give me morphine but I'm like, 'No, I'm not a druggie'. We don't do bad stuff. I had oxygen, gas and air and it made me feel really weird".

You might think he was tough to cope with all that pain but, to be fair, this isn't the worst injury Edward has ever suffered: twitter.com/planetjedward/status/12039280794
